Everyone knows trees are a tour de force in the fight against climate change. But whereas most tree planting initiatives focus on rural locations, Trees for Cities recognizes just how crucial trees are to our urban environments.
Beyond the obvious aesthetic benefit of planting trees in cities, it's estimated that each year, London's trees remove 2.4 million tonnes of air pollution. They're essential in protecting cities from flooding, they provide habitats for various species and have been proven to reduce stress levels. Is there anything trees can't do?
But because of ageing trees and due to felling as a result of urban sprawl, their effect is being diminished. In response, Trees for Cities are working with communities all over the world, to plant more trees and ensure the lungs of our cities are restored.
Why we think they're great
This charity is all about the trees. But it's also about so much more. By working alongside schools and community groups, the charity is focused on educating a new generation of people who understand the importance of caring for our planet. Establishing edible playgrounds, leading woodland projects for kids and redesigning school playgrounds to mitigate against air pollution, are just some of the things they do.
