Forest Conservation

Forests are astonishing places. Not only are they important habitats for millions of species, but they also play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon, soaking up manmade pollutants and producing oxygen.

All over the world, these habitats and the endangered wildlife that call them home are threatened by urban sprawl, development, agriculture, logging and poaching. In fact it’s estimated that 70,000 acres of rainforest is destroyed every day.

To protect forests, we must invest in worldwide conservation projects dedicated to preserving them. Fortunately there are a few standout charities making epic strides through land acquisition, planting trees and intercepting harmful development projects.

It’s a well-known fact that rainforests are hotspots for biodiversity, teeming with endangered wildlife. They also play a vital role in storing and sequestering vast quantities of carbon from our atmosphere. But despite this, it’s estimated that 70,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed every day for logging, agricultural, mining and development purposes.

Rainforest Trust UK works in partnership with Rainforest Trust in the US to protect these incredible ecosystems. To date Rainforest Trust has protected over 37 million acres, and aims to protect another 125 million acres by 2025. At the crux of the organisation’s approach is land acquisition. By converting threatened land into private reserves, national parks and community managed areas, they’re able to leave the rainforest untouched as vital habitat for endangered species and protection against climate change.

Why we think they’re great

We’re right behind Rainforest Trust's bottom-up approach, as they always work in partnership with trusted local NGOs and indigenous communities. In doing so they’ve created a sustainable model which respects not only the rainforests, but also the communities who call them home.

Patronised by Sir David Attenborough himself, the World Land Trust is an international conservation charity focused on protecting the world's most threatened habitats and wildlife.

Through a winning combination of land acquisition, reforestation and reserve management, the WLT have successfully protected forests, grasslands, wetlands and mountains from the threat of development, logging and poaching.

By partnering with a worldwide network of conservation NGOs and through their public figure contacts, the charity is able to have a wide-reaching impact. To date, they've protected over 2 million acres of land and have planted over 2 million trees as well as successfully intercepting environmentally harmful development projects.

Why we think they're great

WLT recognises the importance of land being owned by local people and we have big respect for that. By placing land in the hands of local conservation experts and by employing local people they've been able to empower communities and raise environmental awareness.
